If you are considering using Turnitin for any assignment in your course, it is asked that you make the decision to do so before the semester begins. This will allow your instructional designer to provide you proper training, as part of the expectations noted below, and will ensure that students are notified of the use of the tool via the syllabus at the start of the semester.

The faculty supported the ASAC’s recommendations related to the use of Turnitin.

The following steps are recommended for faculty who wish to use Turnitin in a course:

Faculty members who want to use this software should be permitted to do so. But, before any faculty member uses it, that person should receive training focused on how to use the software and how to read and interpret student reports.
Reports should not be shared with students through Canvas until students have also been trained about how to read the report. The committee’s general recommendation is that reports should not be shared with students.
It is also suggested that you include a sample syllabus statement to make students aware that the tool will be used. See the syllabus statement page in this module for sample language.

Please contact your instructional designer for training on how to properly enable Turnitin for an assignment with the correct settings to meet the expectations noted above, as well as how to review and interpret reports. Please do not enable Turnitin in a class assignment without consulting an Instructional Designer first. The decision to use Turnitin should ideally be made before the start of the semester and clearly articulated in the course syllabus.
